Thingiverse is an open-source platform for sharing primarily free design files for objects to be produced on 3D printers, laser cutters, milling machines, and other digital manufacturing technologies. The platform is widely used by participants in maker communities and by those working in and with DIY technology, including the RepRap project. The platform is a shared repository for dissemination and innovation, including many object files specifically designed for the purposes of repair or modification of products. Thingiverse is the clearest contemporary signal of the potential for a commons connecting designers to users and users-as-makers for distributed, local, small-scale, and fully social mode of production—what Greenfield has called an emergent demand economy.
